Formed on April 3, 1807, the Village of New Berlin shares a colorful and rich history with surrounding communities.  The Village’s historic district includes 122 properties in both residential and commercial areas.  The Preferred Manor, for instance, was built in 1831 and is listed on the National Register of Historic places as a stop in the Underground Railroad of the Civil War.  Today it is a bed and breakfast owned and operated by the Preferred Mutual Insurance Company, who also has its corporate home in New Berlin.

Our population varies.  In the 2000 Census we were on record as hosting 1,129 residents of 425 households and 256 families residing in the Village.  That’s roughly 1,047 people to the square mile, of which the Village is comprised.  Various religious denominations are represented in and around the Village including Methodist, Episcopalian, Catholic, Baptist and Pentecostal.

The Unadilla Valley Central School, about two miles to our south, was established as a merger between the former New Berlin and adjacent South New Berlin central school districts.  It is comprised of 105 full and part-time teachers, teacher assistants and 80 support staff members managing High School, Elementary School and Middle School students.  The Village also hosts the Milford Academy, formally of Milford, CT.

There is much to see and do around New Berlin.  The Village hosts an Art Council which provides various performances throughout the year and the Village maintains its own Library in continued support of Arts and Literature.  Children activities include day camp and Vacation Bible School as well as picnic and playground areas, a local lake for swimming and canoeing, as well as various school sponsored activities.

Vacationers will also find Hunts Pond State Park as a nearby attraction which offers camping, a boat launch, fishing and a picnic area.  The park, opened year round, is also adjacent to state land ideal for hiking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.  Back at the Village there are places to eat, shop or just sit and talk to local residents and learn more about our area.
